Oasis Vieques is a proposed eco-lounge nestled on a secluded pirate cove in Vieques, Puerto Rico, embodying both a tribute and a statement. This visionary project honors the resilience of the local community, who bravely protested against the environmental degradation and harm caused by the American Navy’s training facility on the island. Shaped like a question mark, the building symbolizes the uncertainty and struggles faced by the locals during their fight for justice.
The three-tiered design integrates community and uniqueness: the ground floor houses vibrant spaces for local vendors, fostering economic growth and a potential establishment of a new community in the remote area; the second floor is dedicated to education, empowering visitors and residents alike with knowledge about Vieques’ history and ecology; and the top floor features an observation deck, offering breathtaking views while encouraging reflection on the island’s past and future. Oasis Vieques is both a landmark of remembrance and a beacon for cultural design.

What happens to the future of the oasis is a story of choice. Will it be abandoned due to its remote location? Or will it flourish for years to come?

Riddled with pollution due to a pre-existing Naval training academy, the community gathered to protest the state of the island.
